This was an extremely competitive category. All the entries demonstratated depths of knowledge and understanding by the reporters of their topics and issues and Texans are well served by reporters of this caliber. Mike Ward's work stood out for his enterprise in the case of lax security for prison trustees; use of public records requests to report on drugs used for lethal injections; and interviews to give life to numbers of weapons carried by government employees and legislators in the Capitol. Stories are well written and organized. The articles provide insight into the safety of the public and workings of government that aren't obvious. It's a reporter working a beat and not an agenda.
