Judges Comments:
This had the potential to be an incredibly powerful gallery, given the composition of many of the images, the access granted the photojournalists and the subject matter. But I felt compelled to take it out of contention for top placement because of a number of factors. It was set up not as a gallery, but as an audio slideshow without captions. The lack of captions removed all context save the initial reason for the gallery itself. Beyond that, viewers don't know who's in each image, why each image is important or powerful, where each images was located, etc. A good bit of the impact of the images is removed without good caption information. The second factor that impelled the move from placement contention was the audio. It was unclear from the start (and then again at the end, in the credits) if that version of 'Amazing Grace' was a direct, live recording from Cpl. Leicht's memorial service, or if it had been performed and recorded by someone in the newsroom, if it was a Creative Commons or otherwise licensed work, etc. Using music in general is a bit of a tightrope, but in a situation like this, in which the visual content is already high in emotion, unless the audio's directly recorded from the event, it was just too much. Those points aside, the gallery was tightly edited, very evenly shot and flowed incredibly well. (Meg Martin, online editor, The Roanoke Times|roanoke.com)
