This project showcases the power of multi-media storytelling. It incorporates still photography, audio, video. (As a matter of fact, one could argue that the medium is more of a video than a 'photo gallery.')
Whatever you want to call the vehicle of delivery, this story about the possible closing of a local high school, Sam Houston High, embodies the essence of what journalism should be all about: To shed light on what really matters.
The photographer gets a gold star for capturing significant moments through her photography, and for driving home points succinctly articulated by the voices in the video clips, and separately.
Developing such a project requires a significant commitment of time and resource; it's not an easy story to tell in such breadth.
The editing of the piece is brilliant. Each segment moves in and out of the underlying flow of the piece seamlessly.
The project's success lies in its ability to make the viewer connect with the subjects -- I'm a thousand miles away, but suddenly I want to know what happened, whether the school remained open or not.
