Judges Comments:

Across all three editions entered, this newspaper offered extensive coverage of local topics that affect readers directly (political races, crime statistics and trends) as well as broad coverage of national and international issues. Overall, a lot of "meat" for readers. The clean look and streamlined presentation makes reading and navigation easy. Very little of the design "noise" that helped take other papers out of contention. Generally readable, although I found the sans serif info boxes hard to get through because of the point size and amount of kerning. However, the material broken out in those info boxes and rails was usually good, meaty quick-hit stuff (would have liked more resources-list info on the child abuse story). Some nice headlines ("iPad ... iWant"), many solid headlines and some that could use more precision, such as "Abuse on the rise in Lubbock" (the deck hed could have been used to note the increase in investigators may be responsible in part for the increased number of cases). Impressive use of refers to online content, and good use of the website to extend and deepen coverage, such as the online crime statistics database. Overall, this paper serves readers well, shedding light on important city and county issues as well as giving a broad update on national and international topics.
