Judges Comments:

From 2/20 Sleek, sophisticated layout, though could make better use of color photos. Don't think you could get two more diverse skybox characters: Slipknot and Bob the Builder. Guess you're going for a wide range of audience members. Creative use of story forms on front page, "High Time for High Def" Q&A. Not sure I'm sold on the first reported on caller.com feature. What's the benefit to the reader? Like the use of wire shorts on Page 2. Very little to show your's is a lcoal opinion page. A lot of stuff packed onto your local cover, but it works design-wise. A bit odd to have comentary on a cover. Good, in-depth enterprise reporting piece by Elaine Marsilio, "Poverty -- a hard pill to swallow." Not sure I would have buried it on Page 2 of the local section. Don't see a lot of other enterprise pieces. Nice use of photos in sports section. No local business coverage. 4/17 Nice cover, good use of news, photos and graphic. Don't like the use of promo ads in the middle of copy on the cover, though. More local opinion today. Nice crisp, perfectly timed local track and field photo by Michael Zamora on sports cover. Would give your photographers better credit, however, than turning their credit line up the side of the photo in eensy type. Nice weekend section, real stories, not just rewrites of local events. Like the fact that the dining section is clearly labeled advertisement. 11/1 Even though the paper is the sponsor for the scholarships, hard to see why this should be the play story on your cover. High school seniors get scholarships every day. Then, the inside page with large staged photo of students holding plaques, plus individual mugs -- a bit of overkill. A lot of wire news. Very little local business news. Nice layout and detail photos on local centerpiece. Good enterprise piece by Elvia Aguilar. Good information. Sunday Homes section is pretty. Overall, your paper is well-designed and looks like a sophisticated national paper. This would put it above some other papers design-wise. It is very short on local content, particulary enterprise or in-depth pieces.
