Against the backdrop of the national health-care debate, The Dallas Morning News did something more newspapers should have done: It examined its local health-care system from head to toe. The diagnosis that the system is broken was hardly surprising, but the details about how it is failing should outrage every Dallas area resident. Riddled with inefficiency, abuse, conflicts of interest and misplaced incentives, the Dallas system spends a fortune but doesn't deliver better results. The Morning News also pointed to solutions, and the series managed to be evenhanded while making a convincing argument of the need for fundamental change. "The Cost of Care" brought real understanding to the debate by looking deeply into the economics of health care in one metro area.
