Scott Farwell's piece is a winner in a category with strong contenders. His writing is clear and vivid without being overly done. In fact, what makes this so compelling is that the writer is the "observer" and the reader never gets the slightest hint of his feelings about this story of a father's forgiveness that most would find impossible. It would have been easy to manipulate this into a tearjerker; Scott used restraint, making the story all the more powerful.
