In a field that included several outstanding entries, this report on keeping high school athletes safe from the heat stood alone. The package was well-written and featured excellent breakouts and charts, most notably a district-by-district chart that showed many area school districts aren't following established guidelines. Seven districts couldn't even provide information on how they work to keep athletes safe from the heat. One quote summed up why this story really matters: Having one player out of hundreds go down with heat stroke isn't a bad average ... unless that one player is your son or daughter.
